Food Variety πΏ
π Ingredients = the materials used to prepare a food item.
- Food eaten varies across different regions of India.
- Some food needs very few ingredients β boiled rice needs only raw rice and water.
- Some food needs many ingredients β vegetable curry needs vegetables, salt, spices, and oil.
π Examples of Food Items and Their Ingredients
| Food Item | Ingredients |
|---|
| Roti / Chapati | Atta, water |
| Dal | Pulses, water, salt, oil/ghee, spices |
Food Materials and Sources πΏ
π All food comes from two main sources: Plants and Animals.
- Plants give us grains, cereals, vegetables, and fruits.
- Animals give us milk, meat products, and eggs.
π Ingredients and Their Sources
| Food Item | Ingredient | Source |
|---|
| Idli | Rice | Plant |
| Chicken curry | Chicken | Animal |
| Chicken curry | Oil / ghee | Plants / Animals |
| Kheer | Milk | Animal |
| Kheer | Rice | Plant |
Plant Parts as Food πΏ
π Edible = eatable parts of plants or animals.
Plants give us food from different parts β leaves, fruits, roots, stems, and even flowers.
β οΈ Some plants have two or more edible parts β the mustard plant gives oil from its seeds AND a vegetable from its leaves.
π Plant Parts and Food Examples
| Food Item | Ingredient | Plant Part That Gives the Ingredient |
|---|
| Brinjal curry | Brinjal | Fruit |
| Brinjal curry | Chilli as spice | Fruit |
| Oil | Oil from groundnut, mustard, or soybean | Seed |
Animal Products as Food πΏ
π Animal Products
| Product | Source |
|---|
| Milk | Cows, goats, buffaloes |
| Butter, cream, cheese, curd | Made from milk |
| Meat | Animals |
| Eggs | Animals |
π Milk and milk products like butter, cream, cheese, and curd are used all over the world.
Sprouted Seeds and Honey πΏ
Sprouted Seeds
π Sprouted seeds = seeds that show a small white growth after soaking β they have sprouted.
βοΈ How to Sprout Seeds (Moong or Chana):
Soak dry seeds in water for one day β Drain the water completely β Wrap seeds in a wet cloth and set aside β Small white structures grow out β the seeds have sprouted β
οΈ
- Sprouted seeds can be washed and eaten raw, or boiled and eaten with spices.
β οΈ Do NOT taste unknown plants β some plants could be poisonous.
Honey
π Nectar = sweet juices collected by bees from flowers.
βοΈ How Honey Is Made:
Bees collect nectar from flowers β Bees convert nectar into honey β Honey is stored in the beehive β Humans collect honey from the beehive β
οΈ
- Flowers and nectar are available only for part of the year, so bees store honey for use throughout the year.
What Do Animals Eat? πΏ
π Animals are grouped into three types based on what they eat.
π Classification of Animals by Food π
| Type | Definition | Source Example |
|---|
| Herbivore | Eats only plants or plant products | Cow |
| Carnivore | Eats only other animals | Lion |
| Omnivore | Eats both plants and animals | Dog |
π Animals and Their Food
| Animal | Food Eaten |
|---|
| Buffalo | Grass, oilcake, hay, grains |
| Cat | Small animals, birds, milk |
Common Confusions β οΈ
| Confusion | Clarification |
|---|
| Herbivore eats only herbs | Herbivore eats any plant or plant product β not just herbs |
| Honey is a plant product | Honey is made by bees (animals) from nectar β it is an animal product |
| All plant parts are safe to eat | Only specific parts of specific plants are edible β some plants are poisonous |
| Carnivore and omnivore are the same | Carnivore eats ONLY animals; omnivore eats BOTH plants and animals |
Memory Aids π‘
| What to Remember | Mnemonic / Trick |
