Chapter 8: India β Climate, Vegetation and Wildlife
Source: Exploring Society β The Earth: Our Habitat, Class VI Geography, Pages 56β62 Class: VI | Subject: Social Science β Geography
Weather and Climate π
π Weather β The changes in the atmosphere over a short time (from day to day or even hour to hour) at a specific place.
π Climate β The average weather conditions of a place over a long period of time (many years).
India's climate is of the monsoon type.
- The word monsoon comes from the Arabic word mausim, which means seasons.
Factors That Affect the Climate of a Place:
- Location of the place
- Altitude (height above sea level)
- Distance from the sea
- Relief (mountains, plains, etc.)
| Place | Climate |
|---|---|
| Jaisalmer and Bikaner (Rajasthan) | Very hot |
| Drass and Kargil (Jammu & Kashmir) | Very cold and freezing |
| Mumbai and Kolkata | Moderate and humid |
| Mawsynram (Meghalaya) | Receives the highest rainfall in the world |
Seasons of India π
India Has Four Major Seasons:
| Season | Months | Key Feature |
|---|---|---|
| Cold Weather Season (Winter) | December to February | Sun rays do not fall directly; temperatures are low in northern India |
| Hot Weather Season (Summer) | March to May | Sun rays fall directly; temperatures are very high |
| Southwest Monsoon Season (Rainy) | June to September | Winds from sea carry moisture and bring rainfall |
| Season of Retreating Monsoon (Autumn) | October and November | Winds move back from mainland to Bay of Bengal |
2a. Hot Weather Season (Summer) βοΈ
- Sun rays fall more or less directly on northern India.
- Temperatures are very high across most of the country.
- Hot and dry winds called loo blow during the day.
2b. Southwest Monsoon Season (Rainy) π§οΈ
βοΈ How Monsoon Winds Bring Rain:
Step 1: Winds blow from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal towards India. β Step 2: These winds carry a lot of moisture from the sea. β Step 3: When the winds strike mountain barriers, they rise and cool down. β Result: Moisture in the winds falls as rainfall.
Natural Vegetation πΏ
π Natural Vegetation β The grasses, shrubs, and trees that grow on their own without any help from humans.
- Natural vegetation includes grasses, bushes, shrubs (like cactus and flowering plants), and tall trees (like neem, mango, and palm).
- The type of vegetation that grows in a place depends on its climatic conditions.
- Rainfall is the most important factor that decides the type of vegetation.
- India has a wide variety of natural vegetation because of its varied climatic conditions.
Layers of a Tropical Rain Forest:
| Layer | Height |
|---|---|
| Ground layer | Ground level |
| Shrubs | Up to 1.5 m |
| Young trees | Up to 5 m |
| Canopy | Up to 40 m |
| Emergent (tallest trees) | Up to 60 m |
Why Are Forests Necessary? πΏ
| What Forests Give Us | Details |
|---|---|
| Oxygen | Released into the air |
| Carbon dioxide absorption | Absorbed from the air |
| Soil binding | Tree roots prevent soil erosion |
| Wildlife habitat | Natural home for animals |
| Timber and wood | Furniture, sports goods |
| Fuel | Firewood |
| Food | Fruits, honey |
| Medicine | Herbs and medicinal plants |
| Other materials | Rubber, gum, lac, fodder |
4a. Threats to Forests β οΈ
- Reckless and large-scale cutting of trees (deforestation) is destroying forests rapidly.
4b. Conservation of Forests π―
- Plant more trees to replace what is lost.
- Van Mahotsav is a programme that encourages tree planting.
Wildlife πΏ
- India's forests shelter reptiles, amphibians, mammals, birds, insects, and worms.
- π National animal of India: Tiger
- π National bird of India: Peacock
Where Different Animals Are Found in India:
| Animal | Location |
|---|---|
| Asiatic lions | Gir forest, Gujarat |
| Elephants and one-horned rhinoceroses | Assam |
| Elephants | Kerala and Karnataka |
| Camels | Great Indian desert |
| Wild asses | Rann of Kuchchh |
| Wild goats, snow leopards, bears | Himalayan region |
| Monkey, wolf, jackal, nilgai, cheetal | Various parts of India |
Birds Found in India:
- Common birds: parrots, pigeons, mynah, geese, bulbul, ducks.
- India also has hundreds of species of snakes; cobras and kraits are among the most well-known.
5a. Threats to Wildlife β οΈ
- Cutting of forests destroys the natural habitat of animals.
- Hunting of animals has caused many species to decline rapidly.
- Several species have already become extinct (died out completely).
5b. Conservation of Wildlife π―
| Conservation Measure | Note |
|---|---|
| National Parks | Protected areas for wildlife |
| Sanctuaries | Safe zones for specific animals or birds |
| Biosphere Reserves | Large protected ecosystems |
| Project Tiger | Special programme to protect tigers |
| Project Elephant | Special programme to protect elephants |
| Wildlife Week | First week of October every year |
Migratory Birds πΏ
- Some birds migrate (travel long distances) to India during winter.
- They come from very cold regions such as the Arctic.
Migratory birds that visit India in winter: Pintail Duck, Curlews, Flamingo, Osprey, Little Stint.
π Little Stint β smallest migratory bird; weighs as low as 15 grams; travels over 8,000 km from the Arctic region.
Common Confusions β οΈ
| Confusion | Clarification |
|---|---|
| Weather vs Climate | Weather changes daily; climate is the average over many years |
| Loo winds blow in which season? | Summer (Hot Weather Season), not winter |
| Which season does Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh get rain? | Season of Retreating Monsoon (OctoberβNovember), not the main SW monsoon |
| National animal vs National bird | National animal = Tiger; National bird = Peacock |
| Natural vegetation vs planted crops | Natural vegetation grows on its own without human help; crops are planted by humans |
Memory Aids π‘
| What to Remember | Mnemonic / Trick |
|---|---|
| Four seasons of India in order | π‘ "C-H-R-A" β Cold, Hot, Rainy, Autumn β think of a cheer: "C-H-R-A, India has four seasons, yay!" |
| Mawsynram β highest rainfall | π‘ Think: "MAW" opens wide to catch ALL the rain β widest mouth, most rainfall |
| Loo winds blow in summer | π‘ "LOO is HOT" β both words feel warm and uncomfortable |
| Gir forest β Asiatic lions | π‘ "GRRR from GIR" β lions GRRR in GIR |
| Little Stint β 8000 km journey | π‘ Think: "Small bird, BIG trip" β it weighs barely 15 grams but flies over 8000 km! |
| Van Mahotsav | π‘ "Van" = forest in Hindi; "Mahotsav" = festival β it's the Festival of Forests (tree planting) |
